The Position
Kaufman, Hall & Associates, LLC is seeking a Database Engineer for our Claro Healthcare/Performance Improvement practice. You will take shared ownership (with a team of seven others) of our data ecosystem, supporting the analysis of large, complex data sets for Clinical Documentation Improvement initiatives within healthcare systems across the country. You will support our client service team and our healthcare clients ranging from large academic medical centers to integrated health systems to small community hospitals. The primary function of this role will be working within our dedicated Data Team as a data engineer to understand, process, and provide data to our teams.

The ideal candidate will have impeccable people skills and be able to gracefully navigate complex environments with multiple stakeholders. You will also be expected to exhibit sound judgment while solving problems, prioritizing, demonstrating attention to detail in your work, and being flexible when new information is introduced. We are looking for professionals who are dedicated to producing a high-quality work product and work well in a collaborative environment. This individual will have experience with the Microsoft stack, including Azure and Microsoft SQL Server as well as experience working with large, complex datasets, database design, data modeling, developing SQL queries, stored procedures, automation, database code tuning, and ETL processes.

- Function as a database engineer, supporting multiple database solutions and developing database code.
- Work closely with others on the Tech Team to develop quality data management solutions.
- Work with the team to design and build modern, secure, and performant ETL processes for client data.
- Revise existing systems and code to maintain effective data handling, conversion, input/output requirements, and storage.
- Work within an Agile development environment and participate in all aspects of our software development life cycle (SDLC).
- Become a subject matter expert regarding our data and database systems to be able to help the team create secure and performant database objects.
- Communicate effectively with non-technical team members, leadership, and business contacts to promote a strong sense of collaboration and teamwork.
- In addition, you will be asked to bring creativity to this role as we continue to refine our offerings and continually seek to improve our current data model and output.
- Perform regular monthly data validation as well as deep-dive investigative data validation
- Create new databases for client projects
- Create ETL/ELT pipelines using ADF and SSIS
- Tune SQL queries for speed
- Be able to support multiple projects at once, with strong organizational and multi-tasking skills Create automation using native Azure and Windows tools as well as third party tools
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess:
- 2+ years’ experience as a Data Engineer using Microsoft products.
- Deep understanding of SQL queries, including optimizing for large data sets
- Deep knowledge of Excel, including macros, functions, formulas, VBA script, pivot tables, etc.
- Experience with database design with well-honed SQL skills, the ability to create relational data models, create and adjust complex views and stored procedures, tune database performance, and perform quality control testing using SQL.
- Experience with data automation processes and ETL automation tools.
- Automation, including .bat files, xml, python
- Experience working with data visualization tools is a plus. Tableau is preferred.
- Ability to build and maintain effective and positive relationships with team members.
- Excellent conceptual and analytical skills, organizational skills, critical thinking, written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent self-learner with high aptitude to acquire and learn new skills.
- Experience in performance tuning of queries, using SQL Profiler, evaluating execution plans, and other methods. Experience with Azure App Insights is a plus.
- Experience with Microsoft Azure DevOps.
- Familiarity with Agile development models.
